Hot Cakes are our ready-to-use professional encaustic paints that come in a convenient reusable metal tin. We offer two different sizes depending on how much paint you desire to work with. Our artist-quality colors are made from the most beautiful pigments, the finest Damar Resin, and United States Pharmaceutical Grade (USP) Beeswax. Our paints contain no bleach or synthetic adulterants whatsoever and the Hot Cake tin design makes our encaustic paints extremely easy to use. Simply unscrew the lid, place the metal tin full of color onto your hot palette, and allow your paint to melt. The tin's flat bottom design ensures that your paint will melt evenly and you can get started right away on your painting. When you are finished, replace the lid on your cooled paint and it will keep your paint both clean and dust-free during storage. The tin's safety rim also makes cleaning the tin very easy and even better, the tin can be reused over and over as it is refillable.
An inexpensive pancake griddle makes an excellent surface for your hot palette. Brushes need to be a natural bristle, such as a cheap hog brush. Synthetics will melt on your hot palette. Once you designate a brush to be your encaustic paint brush, it will always be your encaustic paint brush. Use the Slick Wax to clean the color out of your brush so you can move to a different color. By adding the Wax Medium to your colors you can thin them for beautiful transparent washes. Because there is no dry time, you can layer immediately to get different effects. Use heat to bind your layers together. Try a pottery tool to scrape off a layer to bring out the underlying color and add textures to your painting.
